I maintain that Acura has the best damn leather seats in the business for a car that isn’t for Saudi oil sheiks. I admire their good design and oh so buttery looking, perforated goodness when I walk past this car on a regular basis. Some brands look stiff, I notice the Mercedes and Audi seats these days look like concrete slabs, especially the Audi, there is a new one down the street. But these Acura seats look designed to keep you in place yet keep your ass happy, wait that doesn’t sound right.

*Woah anyone notice the tags pop up to add on at the bottom of the post now?? New?

Sorry, as a two-time Volvo owner I’ll have to disagree.

The majority of MBs E-class and below won’t be leather, but the fairly convincing MB-Tex (which has a stiffer feeling than leather). Leather is a pricey option for the volume models, and the plush Nappa leather a bit pricier on top of that. Soft leather can be difficult, as sometimes it doesn’t age well - I remember seeing many early 90s Lexus and Acura with deteriorating interiors 15 years ago.

I parked next to a Lexus CT200h the other day and couldn’t help but notice how comfortable the seats looked. The bolsters are pretty strong looking for what amounts to a churched up Prius.

I see the 2006 S80 seats look nice, most of these others are boring and I don’t like the pattern/cut of the seat.

Yeah I see people who don’t take care of the leather find it goes bad, especially perforated. I think proper care will help a lot. I have a W123 Mercedes with MB Tex and it’s fine in the back seat, from 1983. I have sheepskin on the front seats but I think they looked ok except from the outside of the driver seat, because it gets the most use.

Yeah that car is way better than a Prius, in terms of me not wanting to kill myself. I would consider one used as a commuter car but I’ve had to go to the CRV because I like being up higher in SF traffic and the streets have been repaired so many times, metal plates, speed bumps....the fucking city is under construction, we might as well be off road.

Leather was standard on the 1994-96 Honda Prelude VTEC and SE trims Every one i’ve ever seen, on the road or in the junkyard, has had utterly destroyed seats from the leather being so fragile.

The most surprising thing about them to me is that they end up being nearly the same cost on the used market as the Prius. Perhaps they don’t have as much name recognition, I’m not sure. They don’t get quite as good fuel economy so perhaps that’s it, but I’d definitely rather be in that cockpit than the Prius. Even the top of the line one will have some cheaper surfaces inside, plus you don’t get the funky dash layout.

It needs a cleaning and treatment at least yearly, yeah. I think some of the Japanese brands in the early 90s might have used a chemical that caused the leather to break down over time, though.

My fintail has Tex, the driver’s seat is just starting to go, mostly at the seams. Other seats are fine.

I have to believe there’s a chemical reason, as German and American leather of the era deteriorates less harshly.

I remember back around 2003 or so, I knew a girl with a 91 Legend. It was a nice car with maybe 70K on it, but the seats were splitting. That also reminds me of the steering wheel coating on early Lexus that would wear and peel. At that time I had a 1989 S-class with almost no leather wear, other than a nickel sized spot on the drivers bolster. The car had about 170K on it.
